Sinus Surgery

Sinuses are cavities inside a person’s skull that are positioned around the eyes and nose, particularly within the front of the face. They are lined with cilia, hair-like cells that are very fine. Cilia help drain mucus through the sinuses’ passages and out of the nose.

They also moisten the nasal passages by producing mucus. The mucus acts as a viscous protective layer to aid in keeping out foreign contaminants and particles like pollutants, dirt, and contagious organisms.

The purpose of sinus surgery is to clear the pathways of the sinuses and unclog blockages. The surgery can be performed with little discomfort.

For incessant and recurrent sinus infections this is the best option for most patients. Patients with abnormal sinus structure or abnormal growths in the sinus often resort to this procedure. A doctor will usually try other treatments and procedures first before resorting to surgery. If these doesn’t produce results, surgery will be the last resort.

Reasons for Sinus Surgery

Sinusitis is an infection in the nasal passages which can cause headaches, pressure, and overall congestion. It is sometimes called referred to as a sinus infection.

The goal of surgery is to remove whatever is blocking the sinuses’ drainage pathways. This may include removing some thin pieces of bone, swollen or damaged tissue, tumors or growths blocking the nasal or sinus passage, prevalent mucous membranes, nasal polyps.

A person suffering from sinusitis may have the following symptoms:

  • pressure around the nose, eyes, or forehead
  • thick and discolored nasal drainage
  • excessive cough
  • allergies
  • bad-tasting post-nasal drip
  • clogged ears and hearing changes
  • a deviated septum
  • head congestion and headaches

After Surgery

Most patients even leave the hospital on the same day after the operation. Depending on the degree of the surgery, a person may be given prescription pain medication during recovery. After the operation, it’s common to experience:

  • mild discomfort
  • fatigue
  • nasal congestion
  • small amounts of bleeding

The use of saline rinses, steroids, and antibiotics are common medications prescribed by your doctor after your procedure.

PROPEL®

Dr. Kelley feels that Keeping the sinuses open after surgery is critical for proper healing and sinus drainage. That’s why he uses PROPEL® sinus stent.

PROPEL represents a medical breakthrough clinically proven to improve surgical outcomes for chronic sinusitis sufferers.1

PROPEL is the first and only device clinically shown to keep the sinuses open after surgery, precisely deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly into the healing tissues, and then dissolve.

The innovative sinus stent decreases post-operative scarring and inflammation, reducing the need for additional surgical procedures as well as oral steroids1 and their potential side effects. At the same time, PROPEL’s spring-like, lightweight design means patients usually cannot even tell that it is there.
